Conference: Mountain West
Team: Air Force Falcons Football
Air Force Falcons Football QB Shaun Carney
The Falcons rarely return a lot of starters and in 2003 DeBerry had his most veteran squad yet with 13 returning starters and 51 lettermen back. At one pointthey rose to 5-0 and #25 in the AP poll. AF had a 3 OT loss in 2003 to eventual league champ Utah and surprisingly didn't land a bowl bid finishing at 7-5. Air Force had a great streak of 10 straight seasons of .500 or better but it ended in 2004 with a 5-6 season. That year they were very inexperienced with just six starters back overall attributing to the below .500 record. AF could have had awinning season exceptthey were int'd at the SDSt 3 with :13 left and lost by 6. Despite their 3-4 MWC record, they actually outgained league foes by 23.7 ypg. Last year DeBerry had a much more experienced team with 12 returning starters but suffered HIS first back-to-back losing seasons ever here (1 st time since '80-'81). Things started out well when they had comeback wins vs both Wash and SDSt to open up 2-0 but a missed xp cost them in a 1 pt loss to Wyoming. They led Navy by 7 with 3:00 left but lost in a game that they did not trail in until :01 was left. They were 3-4 when they were blown out by TCU and BYU allowing 546 and 683 yds ending their bowl hopes. AF had 14 players on the injury list while Army had zero and they lost to Army at home. AF had 4 losses by a total of ten points. AF was -7 in turnovers (page 312) and -3 in net close games (pg 299). Their 67-41 record since 1997 is 24th best in the NCAA. Offensively, AF showed more balance on offense than ever before rushing and passing for over 200 yards each in five different games. The Falcons' offense avg'd 30.0 ppg last year, which was their best since '02. For just the 2nd time this decade, AF returns 7 starters on that side this year including QB Carney and could be more potent. AF's defense was last in the MWC in ypg in 2004 and second to last in '05. AF has not had more than six starters back on defense since '92 so desnite having only five starters back this year.
