Head Coach: Bobby Ross (6-16,2 years;
100-92-2 overall, 17 years) 2005 Record: 4-7
Location: West Point, NY Turf: Artificial Capacity: 40,000 Seating Chart:
Army used to be one of the NCAA's powerhouses winning three straight National Titles from 1944-1946 while notching 14 Top 25 finishes in their history. Those years have long passed. They have not beaten a Top 20 team since 1972. They set a school record for losses in 2002 (11) and broke the record again in 2003 with an 0-13 year, the first ever IA team to suffer that record. In 2004 Bobby Ross stepped into a great situation as expectations were low and Berry had the team pointed towards success in 2004 with a large senior class. However, the Cadets did have a lot of ground to make up as in 2003 they were outgained by an average of 193.4 ypg and were -20 in turnovers. As expected, Army did play much stronger in 2004 as they were "only" outgained by 108.5 ypg and after being outscored by 20.8 ppg, trimmed that to 11.6. They also broke their 19 game losing streak including 15 straight losses at home when they upset Cincinnati and finished 2-9. Last year Army was a less experienced team with just 10 starters back. Ross had 211 players to startAugust (25 Sr, 38 Jr, 67 So, 81 Frj.The preseason Sagarin ratings had them listed at just #150 but I called for them to improve on their 2-9 record. They nearly upset #22 Iowa St at home in just the 4th night home game in Michie Stadium history, losing despite a 365-229 yd edge. In the wind and the rain they blew a late 10-7 lead and lost to CM to fall to 0-5. The next week vs #25 TCU, they suffered their 11 th straight loss despite trailing by just 7 points with less than 6:00 left. They got their first shutout win since 1999 when they beat Akron on the road and won their next 3 games. They snapped a 13 game I losing streak at AF but then allowed Navy a series record 531 yards of 1 total offense. On offense they lose their QB and top 3 rushers but with an unusually veteran offensive front and now in the 3rd year of Boss' system, they should easily top last year's 20.0 ppg. Their defense switched from the 4-2-5 to the 4-3 last year. After being the #1170 allowing 490 ypg in 2004, they trimmed that to just 347 allowing 9 ppg less. The defense has 8 starters back and I'll call for them to have the fewest ppg allowed since 1996. Army's schedule is easier than it used to be and with a veteran squad, they have a good shot at becoming bowl eligible for the first time since 1996.
