Baylor has been the worst team in the Big 12, by far, in its short history with a 6-66 league record heading into last season. In 2002 they snapped a 29 game Big 12 losing streak with one win and pulled upsets in both 2003 and 2004. In the 6 years heading into 2005, the Bears have been outscored in league play by margins of 35.8, 32.5, 27.5, 34.2, 30.7 and 21.3. Morriss' first squad had just 12 returning starters and in August had just 76 scholarship players and was -232 ypg in B12 play. In his second season at Kentucky he improved the Wildcats' record from 2-9 to 7-5 so expectations were optimistic for the Bears in 2004. They trimmed their ypg deficit in Big 12 play to 142.1 but only managed to improve to 3-8 and they were -15 in TO's. Morriss had his most talented team here in 2005 with 14 returning starters and the Bears nearly achieved a winning record. With a much improved defense, they snapped a streak of 24 straight road losses by beating SMU and then also knocked off Army and Iowa St on the road. The ISU win was their first Big 12 road win in their 10 year history (0-37 prior). They opened up 3-0 for the first time since 1996 and led A&M 10-7 before a late FG forced OTandtheyfellby3.ISUwasattheBaylor2, up by 3 when they fumbled into the EZ for a TB and Baylor moved to 4-1 when they hosted Nebraska. Unfortunately they came up short, 23-14. They nearly stunned Oklahoma on the road losing in 2 OT's. They outplayed TT for 3Q's but after a couple of questionable calls negating scores, they lost. With Morriss going to backup QB Parks, they struggled down the stretch but he went back to Bell. They led OSU 38-0 in the finale and most likely would have made a bowl had he stuck with Bell the entire season. On offense, Baylor has 8 returning starters and bring in new OC Lee Hays, who authors a Texas Tech-type of spread pass attack. Baylor should have their best ppg since '94. Defensively, they lose 7 top-notch starters and look a little weaker. The Bears host 3 Big 12 teams that had losing records in '05 and IAA NW St but with just 12 starters back (2nd fewest Big 12) they are probably a year away from bowl eligibility.
