In 2002 BG outgained MAC foes by an average of 94.9 ypg and ranked as high as #16 in the polls. BG is a remarkable 8-3 vs BCS schools since 2001 with two of those losses being to Ohio St in '03 and Oklahoma in '04. In 2003, BG rose as high as#15 beating a ranked team (#16 Purdue) on the road for the first time since 1972 (#18 Purdue) and then knocked off #12 N Illinois. Two losses to Miami, however, knocked them down to #23 in the final polls. In 2003, BG outgained MAC foes by an even more impressive 144 ypg. In 2004 they had to replace their star QB, Josh Harris, but had 16 starters back and Omar Jacobs had a great year with an incredible 41-4 ratio. They lost to #2 Oklahoma, the highest ranked foe that BG has ever faced. They finished 9-3 but unfortunately a 2H collapse vs Toledo (led 27-7) cost them a tie for the MAC West Title. Their avg win overall in 2004 was by 44-24. They benefited from +15 in turnovers in 2004 and their 12 returning starters in 2005 were the lowest in the MAC. One Achilles' heel last year was their rush D which allowed 175 ypg. Another key to the season was QB Jacobs being injured in the 1Q vs WM. They dropped two straight MAC games for the first time since 2000 without Jacobs. They benefitted from Miami delaying their game which greatly reduced the crowd and BG also benefitted from +4 in turnovers and numerous bad snaps on punts. They had a shot at winning the MAC East Title but lost to Toledo in 20T, 44-41. BG outgained MAC foes by 69.6 ypg, the best mark of the MAC East schools but only has 10 returning starters. The offense must replace QB Jacobs but the last time they had a first year starter, they averaged 44.3 ppg although that number dropped to 33.8 last year. Still, with most of their top skill players gone, it will be tough to top that total. The Falcons D' allowed 27.6 ppg, their worst total since 1999 and even with just 5
starters back, could be stingier.
