Tommy Bowden's first season opened 8-0 but he's had a lot of highs and lows since (see Coaches). Facing a tough schedule in 2004, they finished 6-5 but did not go to a bowl due to a postgame brawl vs S Carolina. The team had to win 5 of its last six to finish with a winning record as Bowden was once again under heavy pressure. Last year it was status quo as Clemson, after a loss to WF, dropped to 2-3. Bowden became just the second CU coach since 1950 to lose two times in three years to WF and the other, Ken Hatfield, was fired afterthat season. They had a 3 game losing streak for the 2nd straight year and the last time that occurred was in 1973 but every time Bowden must win, he does and CU finished 8-4 including wins over ranked FSU and S Carolina (their 4th straight win over their rival) plus a bowl victory. They bagged 3 wins over Top 20 opponents for the first time since 1989. DC Vie Koenning enters his 2nd year and last year they played a ton of young players with the defense getting better as the season progressed. In fact, in six of the last 7 games they held their foes to 2 TD's or less and 11.4 ppg in that span (26.2 ppg first 5). The Tigers had an amazing 7 close games (3 wins when trailing in 4Q) and in my ACC regional magazine, I describe the best case and worst case scenarios. CU's season could have been as strong as 12-0 or as weak as 5-7. This team has had 3 Top 25 finishes the last six years. The team benefitted from +9 in turnovers last year. They do lose QB Whitehurst but return 5 OL starters and were a combined 39-9 the last 4 times they had all 5 back. They also are in the 2nd year of Spence's offense and he will be able to expand the offense this year. They should top LY's 26.3 ppg. The D was young in '05 and if they show the same improvement they did over the 2H of the ACC's best.
