Head Coach: Dan Hawkins (1st year;
53-11 overall, 5 years) 2005 Record: 7-6,5-3/1st Big 12
Location: Boulder, CO Turf: Grass Capacity: 53,750 Seating Chart:
After a stunning 3-8 season in 2000 (4 losses by 4 points or less), I called Colorado a surprise National Title contender in my 2001 magazine and they were just that. They finished 10-2 in 2001 and
#3 in the country narrowly missing out on playing in the National Title game. In 2002 they won the Big 12 North again with a 7-1 record but with just 9 starters back in 2003 (fewest B12), slipped to 5-7. Gary Barnett did not get to coach the team in the spring of 2004 but they rallied late and won the Big 12 North yet again and their bowl game. They finished 8-5 despite being outgained by 58.3 ypg in Big 12 play and outscored by 8.3 ppg. Last year they were my pick to win the Big 12 North and did so once again. Coming into the year, Barnett had said it didn't appear they had any weaknesses. They got past Colo St in a game they trailed 21 -10 going into the 4Q hitting the game winning 47 yard FG with :04 left. The defense recorded shutouts vs both NMSt and Okla St and was #6 in the NCAA in rush D after 5. Colorado improved to 7-2 with their only losses to Miami Fl and Texas and it appeared likely Barnett would get a contract extension. Unfortunately for Barnett, Iowa St got two 66 yd returns for TD's on an int and a fumble and the Buffs, despite a 363-287 yd edge, lost. Their embarrassing performance at home vs Nebraska was followed up by an even more embarrassing performance in the Big 12 Title game (70-3). Barnett was let go and the Buffs were without QB Klatt for the bowl losing by 9. Hawkins inherits 28 seniors and 20 juniors. They have just five starters back on offense and must replace their QB but with a solid 0-line should be able to top last year's 23.5 ppg. The defense has 8 starters back including a top-notch secondary and I will call for them to have their best ppg allowed since 1996 (18.3). Last season's embarrassing finish should have Colorado as an underrated team this year. While the offensive backfield is my major concern, Dan Hawkins has done more with less talent and should form a decent group. CU has my
#4 rated defense in the Big 12 and #1 special teams. Those are
the little things that win.
