Head Coach: Sonny Lubick (101-57,13 years; 17th year at school; 122-76 overall, 17 seasons) 2005 Record: 6-6,5-3/T2nd MWC
Venue:Hughes Stadium
Location: Fort Collins, CO Turf: Grass Capacity: 34,000 Seating Chart:
Sonny Lubick had recorded 10 straight winning seasons including winning or sharing the conf title 6 times from '94-'03. In 2000 they finishedI #14 in the polls, their highest finish ever in a 10-2 season and including bowls, had won at least 7 games for ten straight years heading into 2004. In 2004, they had just 10 starters back and lost their QB midyear. They shockingly dropped to 4-7 because, as expected, their young D with just three starters back had one of the weakest seasons in the Lubick era allowing 416 ypg and 29.5 ppg. CSU was also -12 in turnovers. CSU only lost 11 lettermen last year, so I forecasted a return to the post season. While the Rams did not disappoint with a 6-5 regular season record, surprisingly, with 6 starters back, the defense yielded 30.8 ppg and 428.8 ypg. CSU finished 5-3 in the MWC but was outgained by 17.3 ypg and actually outscored by 13 points in league play. Lubick used to be gold in November with his teams going 21-4 in his first 9 years but is actually just 6-7 SU since 2002 in that month. Despite their 6-6 finish last year, the Rams were actually outscored by 48 points on the season. To get to a bowl, they had to come from behind vs a 2-8 UNLV team (trailed by 10) in the 3Q and were then blown out in the Poinsettia Bowl by Navy. CSU has finished last in the MWC in rush D for two straight years. In 2004 CSU lost 29 man-games due to injury but in 2005 lost 73! Last year's team only scored TD's on 9 of their last 26 trips inside the 20 yard line. Having to replace SOL starters, their QB and star WR, it may be tough to top last year's 26.8 ppg. It appeared the Rams had eight starters back on defense last year but they lost their best defensive player, FS Ben Stratton, prior to the year and two starting LB's for most of the season. The Rams allowed 30.8 ppg, which was the worst total in the Lubick era. This year they have 7 defensive starters back plus get back two full-time starters from 2004 who missed last year and add VHT Nnamdi Ohaeri who moves to CB from RB.
