Head Coach: Randy Edsall (37-43,
7 years) 2005 Record: 5-6, 2-5/T6th Big
East Venue:Rentschler Field
Location: Storrs, CT Turf: Grass Capacity: 40,000 Seating Chart:
Connecticut had their most successful three year run in school history from 2002 to 2004 winning 23 games including a 21-7 record overthe Iast28 in that span. In their final year of lAAball, •UC was just 4-7 and then 3-8 in their inaugural IA season. In 2003 they reached the full allotment of 85 scholarship players for the first time and I called for their first winning season since 1998. They did not disappoint as they were 9-3 outgaining 11 of their 12 foes. In 2004 they had a senior QB in Dan Orlovsky, two veteran TB's and an 0-line with 4 starters back and had an explosive offense averaging 30.3 ppg and 430 ypg. UC not only made it to a bowl game, they destroyed Toledo 39-10. UC had just 11 returning starters in 2005 having to replace 24 lettermen. They had a soft non-conf schedule and had four home games in Big East play but suffered their first losing record in four years. Their six senior starters were the 6th lowest in the NCAA. They opened up crushing Buffalo and Liberty by a combined 97-0 margin but those easy games masked how inexperienced the team really was. In league play, UC finished just 2-5 and was outgained by 59 ypg. They suffered major injuries on both sides of the ball losing starting QB Bonislawski as well as back up Hernandez (also a LB & KR/PR). As you would expect, this year the Huskies return the 2nd most starters in the Big East (14). All four units on the offense are improved, especially at QB, and should easily top last year's 24.7 ppg. Despite injuries, last year's D allowed just 19.2 ppg partially due to a soft schedule (also GT & L'ville without starting QB's) but this year's D with 7 starters back will be tougher. UC has an excellent home field advantage with 12 consecutive sellouts at Rentschler Field. The Huskies have an excellent shot at garnering their 2nd bowl in school history.
