FSU had an amazing rune 'i -"Rght years of finishing in the Top 5 of the final polls but in 2001 saw/numerous streaks end. For the first time they did not finish first in the ACC as their record fell to 8-4.2002 was even worse as they dropped to 9-5 but at least they took home the ACC crown (7-1). In 2003 they won the crown again and putgained ACC foes by 97 ypg even though it was the first time since 1986 they were not in the preseason Top 10. In 2004 they came into the season ranked #5 but finished 2nd in the ACC. They won their bowl for a 9-3 season despite converting just 23.7% of their 3rd downs, the worst mark in the NCAA. Their 373 ypg was their lowest total since 1981. Last year it appeared they would have 11 starters back (fewest ACC) but then lost projected starters QB Sexton, RG Meinrod, CB Cromartie and NG Dickson prior to the season. They also had to replace 8 DC's (see pg 308). The team only had 60 players workout over the summer and then suffered a spate of injuries on the OL, WR, DL and DB units. While thedefense recorded 9 sacks vs Miami, FSU was outgained 313-170 but somehow managed to win. They were outgained by BC 380-244 on the road but won and surprisingly opened 5-0 with talk of a National Title, rising to#4 in the AP poll. After a loss to Virginia on the road, they won their next two and were 7-1 but then suffered 3 straight losses for the first time since 1983, being outscored by an avg of 30-12. Their 3 ACC losses were their most ever but they still took homethe Atlantic Division Title and earned a berth in the ACC Title game. They were a 14' point dog to VT but pulled the outright upset and gained their 12th ACC Title. FSU is the only team in the country to appear in a New Year's (or later) bowl every year for the last 15 years. In the bowl, Penn St kept them in the game and FSU could have won had they made a FG (sound familiar?). The offense last year was back to their good old days as they were the #1 ACC passing offense and they were #1 in the ACC in total offense until OL injuries hit. Despite being the ACC Champ, FSU only outgained ACC foes by 28.5 ypg, the 6th best mark. The offense loses 5 starters but now has a veteran QB, should have a healthier 0-line which is more experienced than 2005 (4 starters back) and will easily top last year's 28.9 ppg. While the defense has just 5 starters returning, I look for them to improve solidly on 2005's 22 ppg allowed. FSU "earned" 39 points in my Draft Day Party Hangover (see pg 308). FSU had four players selected in the first round of the draft tying a school high set in 1997. Florida St has just 6 scholarship seniors but their 8 home games are the most in school history. If the Seminoles knocks off Miami in the opener, they have a shot at running the table and are a legitimate National Title contender.
