Head Coach: Mark Richt (52-13,5 years) 2005 Record:10-3, 6-2/Ist SEC East Venue:Sanford Stadium
Location: Athens, GA Turf: Grass Capacity: 92,746 Seating Chart:
Mark Richt is doing an incredible job here. In 2002 UGA won their first SEC Title in 20 years setting a school record with 13 wins and finished #3 in the final AP poll. They had just 9 starters back in 2003 and despite a spate of injuries and suspensions, somehow lost just 3 games including 2 to eventual National Champ LSU. UGA outgained SEC foes by 121.8 ypg which was the best markin the conference in '03. In 2004 Richt had his most veteran squad yet with 14 returning starters, including QB David Greene. They finished 10-2, their 3rd straight year with double-digit wins, which was the first time they achieved that since 1980-'83 under Vince Dooley. They also beat Florida for the first time since 1997 and outgained SEC foes by an average of 105 ypg. Last year they lost just 15 lettermen and had 12 senior starters. Six of those 15 letterman were NFL DC's including two 1 st rounders (FS Davis, DE Pollack) and two 2nd rounders. Last year my publication was the only one in the country to call for UGA to win the SEC East as everyone else had them finishing 3rd. I called the Bulldogs one of my surprise teams and they very nearly went undefeated but QB Shockley was injured and they lost to Florida by 4 without him. With Shockley not 100% the next week, they lost to Auburn by 1. They throttled LSU in the SEC Championship game but came up short in the Sugar Bowl with -3 in turnovers to finish 10-3 and #10 in the AP poll. Only UGA and USC have finished in the Top 10 in each of the last 4 years (#7 '04 and '03, #3 '02). UGA's defense has finished in the Top 20 for five straight years. Offensively, the Bulldogs return just 4 starters and with an inexperienced QB and weaker 0-line, figure to avg less than the 29.5 ppg of 2005. The Bulldogs' D has just 5 starters returning but that was the same amount as in 2002 when they allowed just 15.1 ppg and have not allowed more than 16.5 ppg in the last 4 years. UGA only has 9 returning starters and while replacing their QB, they are not in as good of shape at that position this year. They do have the most favorable schedule of the East as they don't have to play at Fla or Tenn and are capable of getting back to the Title game.
