Bill Snyder did an absolutely amazing job at this school taking a team with the worst combined record in the history of the NCAA and guiding them to bowl games in eleven straight years. I think he did one of the best coaching jobs ever in the NCAA getting this team into National Title contention role in five different years. Snyder opted to step aside from his miracle in Manhattan and leaves with 136 wins which is not only triple the wins of the #2 coach in K-St history, but was two more than all of KSU's prior coaches combined since 1937!! This is a school that had a 27-game winless streak but Snyder guided them to their first conf title since 1934 including Big 12 Titles in 1998,2000 and 2003. They actually had 11 wins in six out of seven years. They renamed the stadium Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Under Snyder, they also won for the first time in Lincoln since 1986 and handed Nebraska their worst home loss since 1958,38-9. In 2003 they outgained B12 foes by 171.6 ypg but unfortunately slipped the last 2 years. In 2004 K-St plunged to 4-7 despite being #13 in the preseason polls and had their first season without a bowl since 1992. Despite a 2-6 record in the Big 12, they outgained B12 foes by3.7ypgin'04.Lastyearforjustthe2ndtimesincetheB12was formed, K-St was not in the preseason Top 25. They took their names off their jerseys for the first time since 1989 to build team camaraderie. They opened up 3-0 playing their usual soft non-conf schedule. After a 43-21 loss to OU, they were outgained by Kansas 236-182 but won 12-3. They led TT13-10 with 2:00 left in the half but then QB Hodges exploded for 684 ttl yards in a 59-20 rout. They lost to A&M 30-28. After a 2H comeback, Colorado punted with :55 left in the game but K-St fumbled the punt and CD got a 50 yard FG with :06 left. They allowed a 40 yard FG by Nebraska with 1:05 left in a 27-25 loss. In Snyder's final HG, they knocked off Missouri 36-28 and came up just one win short of a bowl. The Wildcats have 17 returning starters which is the most since 1998 (only 7 last year). K-St's offense has 9 starters back and is loaded with talent at the skill positions. They also have a more experienced 0-line. They should easily top last year's 26.3 ppg (lowest S/'94). K-State's defense has struggled the last couple of years allowing 30.6 ppg in '04 and 27.7 last year. Overall they had just 3 starters back on the defense last year and were probably better than the numbers indicated. K-St estimated that roughly 30% of the opponents points were a result of drives of 40 yards or less. The last time K-St had more than 7 starters back on D they allowed just 11.8 ppg and this is clearly the Cats' best D in 3 years. A couple of concerns that I have for this year is that they are replacing one of the best coaches in the NCAA with a staff that has no experience at HC or coordinator. They are also shifting from an offense that mostly used the option to a pass attack (see Neb). K-St is capable of getting off to a 5-1 start this ear and players buy into new coaches' programs when they get off to a good start so the Cats do have a shot at returning to a bowl for the first time since 2003.
