Head Coach: Jack Bicknell'(40-42,
7 years; 10th at school) 2005 Record: 7-4,6-2/T3rd WAC
Venue:Joe Aillet Stadium
Location: Ruston, LA Turf: Grass Capacity: 30,600 Seating Chart:
In 2001 LT took home the WAC Title but in 2002 suffered from -13 in turnovers and finished 4-8 dropping some winnabls games. In 2003 they led WAC Champ Boise 23-16 at home but lost and finished just 5-7. 2004 was an atypical year for the offense which is known for passing but was led by Ryan Moats. LT had 490 rush attempts and just 300 passes and actually had more yards rushing than passing. LT really wanted to join CUSA which would have been a better geographic fit for them but instead are the only WAC school in the Central Time Zone. Atthe end of 2004, a 51 -14 blowout of Rice on the road kept Bicknell around for 2005 as the team finished 6-6. They also knocked off unbeaten Fresno at home 28-21. Last year they had just 9 returning starters but did have 20 seniors and played great at home. Over the last 7 years this team has faced 21 Top 25 clubs, 24 from BCS conferences, and playing one of the toughest schedules among WAC teams. The hurricane did cancel some of LT's practices in Sept but they played well vs Kansas. Despite a 295-277 yd edge and a 7-7 halftime score, two TO's set up TD's in a 1:06 span and KU walked away with a 20 point win. LT won 6 of their next 7 to move to 6-3. They were leading Boise at home 10-7 at half but for some reason, couldn't stop the run in the 2H and lost by 17. The next week they were at #23 Fresno and stunningly won 40-28. Despite their 7-4 record and win over Fresno, LT did not get a bowl bid. In conf play, LT was 6-2 but was actually outgained by 11.1 ypg. LT benefited from +13 in turnovers last year (see Turnovers=Turnaround). LT averaged 28.7 ppg last year on offense, their best since 2001. With 7 starters back on that side of the ball, even breaking in a new QB, should top that total. First year DC Randy Bates had just. 4 starters back on D but they still allowed just 25.5 ppg which was theirbestsince 1997!They allowed under30ppgforthefirsttime since 1999 and were even better than the 25.5 ppg allowed as both NMSt and NT got 2 TD's when trailing by 30+ points in the 2H and they held Hawaii's potent offense to just 14. Despite having just two starters back on D the unit is close to last year in terms of experience and should be better than the number (2) would indicate. Thethree major concerns I have with LTthis year are the +13 in turnovers they benefitted from last year (see pg 312),the fact thattheyhave8road games and that they have just 2 returning starters on defense.
