Memphis Tigers Football OLB Quinton McCrary
After going -14 in turnovers in 2002 and finishing with a 3-9 record, Memphis was the typical Turnovers=Turnaround (pg 312) team in 2003. They won 7 or more games for the first time since 1976, with their first bowl appearance since 1971 and accomplished all that with just 12 starters returning. They outgained league foes in 2003 by 151.3 ypg which was the league's best mark by far, almost doublethat of the#2 team. They only lost 10lettermen heading into in 2004 with 15 starters back including QB Wimprine and RB Williams. Unfortunately the defense struggled allowing 31.3 ppg and 417.8 ypg. They lost two games in the final minute (UAB and L'ville) but finished 8-4 markingthefirsttimethey had back-to-back 8+ win seasons since 1963. That 2004 team, for the first time ever, appeared in the AP poll (was #14 in the UPI in '63 but the AP only counted the Top 1Othat year). Last year was a radical shift for the offense as they had just 3 starters back and had to replace Wimprine. After throwing for 200+ passing yards 9 times in 2004, they had zero games of 200+ yards in 2005 relying on RB DeAngelo Williams. I called for Memphis to achieve their 3rd consecutive winning season. They did so for the first time since 1994 and knocked off Akron in the bowl game despite losing their 1st and 2nd string QB's early in the season. They knocked off previously unbeaten UTEP 27-20 and nearly upset Tenn leading 16-14 in the 4Q despite RB Williams missing the game and QB Avery injuring his ankle. They got their first win at S Miss since 1984 and after opening the season 4-5, won their last 3. Their 13 returning starters are 3rd fewest in the league and they benefitted from +7 in turnovers and 4 close wins last season (also 3 close losses). While the offense lost DeAngelo Williams and their starting QB, they figure to pass more and with 7 returning starters, look to be upgraded at every spot but RB. Despite the loss of 3 of their top 4 tacklers, they have 6 starters back and should remain healthier and allow less than the 405 ypg they did in 2005.
