From 2000-2002 Miami was arguably the best team in the country each season. In 2000 they did not get a chance to play in the National Title game despite a 10-1 record and a win over FSU, a team that appeared in the Title game. They rectified matters in 2001 blazing through the schedule undefeated as they beat teams by an average of 42.7-9.8. They also won the school's 5th National Title by wiping out Nebraska 37-14 in the Rose Bowl. They had just 10 starters back in 2002 and went undefeated again but "only" outscored foes by an average 40.5-19.1. They were an 11' point favorite in the Fiesta Bowl but lost in 2 OT's to Ohio St ending their 34 game winning streak. They had to replace QB Ken Dorsey and at the end of 2003 Coker was hesitant to throw. The Hurricanes did finish 11-2 including a bowl win over Fla St when they missed another crucial FG but had 3 fortunate wins that year. In 2004 they had an ACC low 10 starters back. Miami had the schedule to run the table and opened 6-0 but then lost to NC and Clemson in back-to-back weeks and still with the shot at the ACC Title, lost at home to VT. Defensively they went through a very un-Miami-like 3 game stretch allowing 33.3 ppg but for the season yielded just 17.0. They had 9 starters back on defense last year and allowed just 214.7 ypg in their first 8 including their blowout win in Blacksburg. Amazingly the defense yielded 380.8 ypg in theirfinal four. The Hurricanes should have won the opener (FSU) as they had a 313-170 yd edge but stunningly lost by 3. They regained control of the ACC with their win over VT but shockingly lost at home to GT and were relegated to the Peach Bowl for the 2nd consecutive year. LSU, with a backup QB, shredded them with a 468-153 yd edge. Last year UM outgained ACC foes by 113.3 ypg (2nd best). Miami's 104 straight weeks in the AP poll is the longest current active streak (Texas w/92 is #2). This year the draft takes a heavy toll on UM (see pg 308). The Hurricanes "earned" 38 points in my Draft Day Party Hangover. Miami has produced 84 picks in the firsts rounds of the NFL draft since 1984 which is most in the NCAA and that includes 12 straight years with a #1 pick. The Canes had just 4 starters back on offense last year and only avg'd 27.1 ppg (lowest since '95). This year they have 5 starters returning and should be able to top that number, even with a rebuilt 0-line. UM allowed just 14.3 ppg last year, their best in four seasons, but that was with 9 defensive starters returning and should be able to top that number, even with a rebuilt O-line.
