I may be dating myself but I remember watching Miami in the early 70's when they finished #15, #10 and #12 in the final polls compiling a three year record of 32-1-1 and winning three straight Tangerine Bowls, all over teams that are now in the SEC. Miami had last gone to a bowl in 1986 and had 16 straight years without a MAC Title despite the fact they had 9 straight winning seasons heading into 2003. In Ben Roethlisberger's seniorseason, Miami simply went 13-1 with their only loss being to Iowa (finished #8). They entered the Top 25 for the first time since 1975 and got their first MAC East Title. They routed Louisville in the GMAC bowl and were #10 in the final AP poll. Terry Hoeppner was named MAC Coach of the Year. Since FieldTurf was installed at their stadium in 2003, they are 13-2 at home. Miami was a classic Turnovers=Turnaround team in 2004 (+20 TO in '03 to -10 TO '04). When they lost at Marshall, 33-25, it appeared their hopes for a MAC Title were gone but they ran the table, got fortunate when Marshall lost to Akron and won the MAC East Title again. They dropped the MAC Title game and their bowl and finished 8-5. Shane Montgomery took over as the HC last year and had 14 returning starters. Unfortunately, they lost their top two LB's early and opened 0-2 to run their losing streak to 4. They still appeared to have the Title in hand until they decided to delay the BG game due to a forecast of inclement weather. When the teams finally returned onto the field, the weather had never appeared and most of the fans had left. They suffered from some extremely poor punt snaps in that game and lost. Instead of the Conf Title, they had to settle for being co-Champs of the East, despite having 16 senior starters. Last year they were in a lot of close games so they were not able to play their backups as much and have the fewest amount of returning starters in the league this year. Miami also benefited from +13 in turnovers. Miami goes for their 13th straight winning season (5th longest streak nationally) and is trying for their fourth straight MAC East Title. While RB Murphy and WR Robinson are back, having to replace three longtime starting OL's and their QB, the RedHawks figure to see a drop in their 33.7 ppg production of 2005. This is the first time since 1995 that the RedHawks have graduated over half their defensive starters and in fact, have just two returning (4 in '95). Not much separates the #1 through #5 teams in the MAC East but Miami has a lot of tough road games this year and are the least experienced taem in the MAC and may actually see their streak of winning seasons snapped in 2006.
