When the SBC was formed, MT looked like the class of the league and were favored to win it in each of the first two seasons. Unfortunately, after an 8-3 record in 2001 when they narrowly missed out on the title, they dropped to 4-8 in 2002 including 2-4 in conf play, despite outscoring foes by an avg 11.1 ppg. In 2003 they again finished 4-8 with a couple of OT losses and had 5 losses by 8 points or less. They tied for 2nd in the SBC at 4-3 but were actually outgained by 79.9 ypg in league play. In 2004 they improved to 5-6 and last year had 17 returning starters and were arguably the most talented team in the league. They trailed Alabama just 9-7 at the half and had an 18-8 FD edge vs Meineke Car Care Bowl Champ NCSt. They also beat SEC member Vanderbilt 17-15 (a game which basically knocked Vandy out of a bowl) and destroyed league champ Ark St 45-7. They outgained league opp's by 30.1 ypg, which was the 2nd best mark in the league. Amazingly MT outscored league foes by a league best 7.4 ppg but ended up with a 3-4 SBC record and a losing year! They had an amazing loss to NT in which they outFD'd them 22-14 but suffered -5 turnovers. They lost to Akron the next week in a flat spot, being outgained 421 -211. They led ILL 10-0 but allowed the game-winning TD with 1:04 left. MT allowed ULM a TD pass in the last minute and missed a 52 yd FG in the last seconds. MT also allowed FIU a 20 yd TD run with 1:19 left. It's agreat situation for new Coach Stockstill to step into and MT returns 13 starters, including QB Marks from a team that could easily have been 7-4. The offense greatly underachieved lastyear averaging just 19.1 ppg, which was 5.4 ppg worse than any year since they joined IA ball. With 9 starters back on offense, they will be much more potent. MT's D allowed just 18.7 ppg, their best since moving to IA ball by 7.3 ppg!
