The Gophers went to bowl games in 1999 and 2000 but I called for them to finish last in the Big 10 in 2001 and they did. That was an inexperienced team with just 3 returning starters on D. In '02 they were more experienced and I said they could get off to a 5-2 or 6-1 start due to a soft non-conf schedule but struggle in the 2H of the season. UM started the year at 7-1 (best start since '67) and were ranked #19. They lost their final 4 conf games by a combined 169-79 but upset Arkansas in the Music City Bowl (1 st bowl win 17 yrs). Mason called 'OS's squad the strongest and fastest edition he had ever coached. Eight wins had been the high mark in the Mason tenure but I called for them to top that total as they avoided Ohio St and Purdue. UM responded by winning 10 games for the first time since 1905 and their offense set records for points (503), total offense (6,430), rushing yards (3,759), completion % (61.3) and FD's (326). It helped that they had 12 games (more than they used to play). They were #4 in the NCAA in total offense (494 ypg). The Gophers outgained Big 10 foes by 138 ypg just 1.1 ypg less than league champ Mich. In '03 they opened 6-0 for the first time since 1941, but suffered a tough loss at home vs Mich blowing a big lead and the chance for a rare Big 10 Title (last in 1967). In '04 they opened 5-0 but after another tough loss to Mich suffered a Maize and Blue hangover and were trounced by Mich St. UM dropped 5 of their last 6, before rebounding with a bowl win over Alabama. Last year, despite being a stronger team, they had a tougher schedule, dropping Illinois and NW and adding Purdue and Ohio St. The Gophers got their first win at Mich since '86 (16 straight losses) and moved to #22. They gave up a blk'd punt for a TD with :30 left and lost to Wisconsin despite a 411-131 rushing edge. Against the top defense in the country (Ohio St), UM piled up 578 yards but lost at home. With a shot at a NY's Day bowl, they were thrashed by Iowa in the finale and blew a big lead in the bowl vs Virginia. Despite their 4-4 conf record, UM outgained Big 10 foes by44,0ypg (4th best). They have averaged 38.7,30.1 and 35.8 ppg the last 3 years but have had a minimum of 7 returning starters on offense. This year they have just 6 back and possibly lose their top 2 rushers and 2 super OL's so it will be tough to match 2005's production.
