Gary Pinkel had two losing seasons to open up his Tenure here but improved to 8-5 in 2003 including their first bowl appearance since 1998. MU was a fortunate+11 in TO'sas they were actually -6.5 ypg in league play. In 2004 MU was the preseason favorite to win the B12 North, were ranked #18 in the AP preseason poll, their highest since 1980, and had dreams of their first league crown since 1969. They stunningly blew big leads vs Troy, Okla St and Kansas St and despite being favored in 9 games, finished just 5-6. Last year they had just 6 senior starters returning, the fewest in the Big 12 but despite their 3-5 finish in 2004, they were +42.8 ypg (4th best B12). Despite having just 10 starters back, one of them was Brad Smith, their all-time career passing and rushing leader. Pinkel labeled the 2005 team the fastest team he had coached anywhere. I called for Missouri to get back to a bowl game despite ten scholarship players quitting the team from the end of spring to the start of Sept. The Tigers allowed Brad Smith to get outside the pocket more and he led the team with 1,301 rushing yards (5.7) while completing 59% of his passes. Pinkel's teams have managed to get upset by a weaker non-conf opponent three of the last 4 years (BG in '02, Troy in '04) and were stunned by New Mexico 45-35 at home. After 3 games, they were #5 in the NCAA in total offense (554 yds) before being blasted by Texas, 51-20 (330 yds). They needed OT to get past Iowa St as backup QB Daniel led them back from a 10 pt deficit and won in OT. They destroyed Nebraska with 523 yards offense and stood 5-2 and were thinking Big 12 North Title. They lost 3 of their last 4 including vs KSt in coach Bill Snyder's final home game. In the bowl they trailed SC 21 -0 when they got a crucial 99 yd IR for a TD which turned the momentum completely around and they actually came away with a 38-31 win (largest comeback win since 1939!) and just their 2nd winning season since 1998. While Missouri has 15 returning starters, they do lose Brad Smith but still could come close to last year's 30.8 ppg production. After having just 4 starters back on defense last year and allowing 29.2 ppg (almost 10 more than 2004), this year's D has 7 starters back and figures to be much stingier.
