Head Coach: Paul Johnson (28-21, 4 years; 7th year at school) 2005 Record: 8-4
Location: Annapolis, MD. Turf: Grass. Capacity: 34,000 Seating Chart:
Paul Johnson is doing a tremendous job here as Navy was just 11-45 SU from 1998-2002 which includes Johnson's first season. They then got their first bowl bid since 1996 in 2003 and repeated the last two years in addition to winning the Commander In Chief's Trophy 2 consecutive years after not having won it since 1981. Johnson is 7-1 vs Army and AF combined with his avg win over Army being 44-14. In 2004 they had one of their most veteran groups yet with 14 returning starters and finished 10-2 including a 34-19 bowl win over New Mexico. They started out 7-1 for the first time since 1978. They had 9 regular season wins for the first time since 1963 and after winning the bowl, their 10 wins were the most in 99 years of football. They were #24 in the polls which was the first time they finished the season ranked since 1963 and the firsttime they even appeared in the polls since 1979. Last year the schedule got a lot tougher, they had just 5 returning starters (fewest in the NCAA) and had to replace 37 lettermen. Navy opened up with two 3 point losses to a pair of BCS schools (Maryland and Stanford) but became the first Navy team to open 0-2 and yet achieve a winning record since 1928. The Mids were +4 in net close wins in 2004 (pg 299) and as expected, the record did drop but only to 8-4 and they closed the season with another solid bowl win. They did trail AF by 7 with 3:00 left and rallied for the win to get past Kent St by 3. Navy did not defeat ateam that finished with a winning record. They avg'd a school record 33,013 at home and sold 23,000 tickets to the Poinsettia Bowl who will invite them any year they have a winning record. Navy was #30 in the final poll in 2005 and became the first Navy team since 1906-08 to have 3 straight 8+ win seasons. Their offense avg 43.7 ppg the last 3 games (41.3 last 3 gms L3Y). The Mids have led the NCAA in rushing 2 of the
an unusual 7 starters back and could be among their best ever. It is unusual for the Mids to return a lot of starters and the defense has 9 back, which is the most since at least 1990. Johnson's 2004 group had 8 starters back and allowed a paltry 19.8 ppg. With 16 returning starters, this is the best Navy team in recent history and a team not only capable of double snaps its 42 game losing streak to Notre Dame, could actually flirt with an unbeaten season.
