Conference: ACC Atlantic
Team: North Carolina State Wolfpack
North Carolina State Wolfpack ROV Garland Heath
Philip Rivers started as a true frosh for first year HC Chuck Amato and that duo led NCSt to four straight winning years and four straight bowls. NCSt came into '03 ranked #16 in the preseason poll, but finished a disappointing 8-5. After being a high scoring team under Rivers, the team was turned into a defensive dominated squad the last 2 years. They led the NCAA in total defense in 2004 (221 ypg) but had three close losses including their controversial SOD at the NC goal line with :06 left. In 2004 NCSt actually outgained ACC foes by a league best 100.2 ypg but due to -17 turnovers actually finished 5-6. Last year they lost just 17 lettermen so big things were expected. Amazingly in the opener NCSt had a 438-232 yd edge vs VT and LOST. The team lacked discipline most of the year with many stupid penalties and turnovers. Amato was catching a lot of flak after the team opened 2-4 so AD Fowler posted seven paragraphs supporting his coach on their website. Their 5-1 record down the stretch was their best finish since 1973. They are the only ACC team to have beaten Florida St in Tallahassee and have done it twice. Five players left early for the NFL (see page 308) and they benefitted from 4 close wins. The offense was still a trouble spot for the Wolfpack as in four of their seven victories, they failed to top 300 yards offense. Despite having seven starters back on offense last year, the Wolfpack only avg'd 20.8 ppg which was their lowest since 1999. They lose some outstanding receivers and OL's but should be able to top that total. Despite having just 5 starters back on D last year, the front seven was loaded with talent. The Wolfpack allowed just 17.7 ppg, their best total since 2002 (17.0) and 2nd best total since 1992 (16.2). This year only 5 starters return but they have 15 players back that have at least one career start. Both Jimmy Sutton (4.4 spd) and Miguel Scott (4.49 spd) run the 60m for the track team, showing the unit's top-notch speed. They lose a ton of talent to the NFL including three 1st round DC's and will not be as dominant as the last two years. The Wolfpack do not play either Miami Fl or VT out of the Coastal Div, giving them a great schedule.
