Head Coach: John Bunting (24-36, 5 years; 6Z-50-2 overall, 10 years) 2005 Record: 5-6,4-4/4th ACC Coastal
Location: Chapel Hill, NC Turf: Grass Capacity: 60,000 Seating Chart:
In Bunting's first season almost everything went right and the team went 8-5 including a Peach Bowl win over Auburn. Unfortunately the next two seasons the team went 3-9 and 2-10. In 2003 Duke beat NC for the 1 sttime since 1989. That year NC was outgained in ACC play by a league worst 132 ypg and had a veteran D that yielded 38.3 ppg. In 2004 the D had 6 starters back but still gave up31.8 ppg. After being-15inturnovers in 2003 they still went from 2-10 to a bowl (see Turnovers=Turnaround) despite being picked 10th in the preseason ACC poll and facing the #2 toughest schedule. Bunting was all but fired after a loss to Utah put them at 3-4, but after landing a bowl was given a two year contract extension. Last year they had 15 returning starters but took on the #1 toughest schedule. A couple of tough losses cost them a bowl. They dropped a TD vs Miami, or they would have led 23-7 at the half. They lost in OT to Maryland 33-30 and a dropped TD pass costthem a 7-6 halftime lead vsVT. Bunting will be under some pressure as he is just 24-36 here in 5 years. Nine of their 12 opponents were in a bowl, and this year their schedule ranks #23. They also have just 12 returning starters (3rd fewest ACC). NC had the 6th best record in conf play of ACC teams (4-4). Last year the offense was breaking in a new QB and only avg'd 18 ppg, their worst since 1999. While they only return five offensive starters, they will be more potent. Last year BC Coach O'Brien said that personnel-wise NC had the best defense in the conference but played a tough non-conf schedule including L'ville on the road (69 pts). In the other 10 games they allowed just 21.9 ppg including holding Wisconsin to 14, when the Badgers came in avg 61.5 ppg in their first two. After being last in the ACC in defense in 2004 (446.5 ypg), NC improved to 349.2 ypg. While they lose four starters on defense, they return 16 players with starting experience, have good size and speed and should have their best ppg allowed in at least 5 years. While NC draws ND, their conf slate is more manageable as they avoid BC, Florida St and Maryland from the Atlantic.
