Head Coach: Bill Callahan (13-10,1 years) 2005 Record: 8-4,4-4/T2nd
Big 12 North
Location: Lincoln, NE Turf: Artificial Capacity: 73,918 Seating Chart:
Nebraska was 11 -0 and headed for the Big 12 Title game in 2001 when they were upset at Colorado 62-36. From that poin through the end of 2004, the team had nine losses by 22 or more including 3 in 2004. Frank Solich's last team finished 10-3 in 200; and earned an amazing 35th straight bowl but he was let go. Ir 2004 they were making a dramatic switch on offense going frorr the option to a West Coast pass attack. That year I called for Iowa St, who finished 2003 at 2-10, to top NU in the Big 12 North standings. Nil's loss to Colorado in the finale gave them their first losing season since 1961. After being +23 in turnovers in 2003, they were -13 in '04. Callahan brought in 12 JUCO's for 2005. They installed new FieldTurf and made $50 million worth of improvements to Memorial Stadium. They had to replace 31 lettermen (most in Big 12). The defense did record an NCAA high 50 sacks despite losing 3 players in the first 40 picks of the NFL draft. They set a school record with 11 sacks against Maine and the D had 3 defensive TD's vs Wake Forest (first time since 1962). NU was young with 25 frosh and soph on the 2 deep for the Alamo Bowl. The Huskers blocked a FG on the last play to get past Pitt 7-6. They suffered their first Homecoming loss since 1968 when vs TT they got an int which appeared to seal the win with 1:13 left but fumbled the ball back on the return and Tech got a TD for a 34-31 win. After beating Baylor in their first road game to move to 5-1, they were thrashed by Missouri being outgained 523-279. After a loss to Oklahoma, they amazingly were blown out vs Kansas, 40-15, being outgained 428-138 and snapping a 36 game win streak vs the Jayhawks dating back to 1968. With a bowl in jeopardy, they nailed a 40 yard FG with 1:05 left to get past K-St and then stunningly routed Colorado on the road 30-3 with a 497-212 yd edge. They trailed Michigan in the bowl 28-17 but rallied for the win and an 8-4 season. This year the Huskers have the most returning starters so far under Callahan (15) and are now in the 3rd year of their systems. The offense, with 8 starters back, should achieve their highest ppg since 2001 (35.6). The defense allowed just 21.0 ppg in '05 and despite the loss of four of the top eight tacklers, has 7 starters back and should be even better in 2006. To me the Huskers are clearly the most talented team in the Big 12 North. Despite a schedule that includes USC and Texas, I give the Huskers a great shot at topping last year's 8 wins and getting to the Big 12 Title game.
