Nevada amazingly improved its win total each season under then-coach Chris Tormey, moving from 2 to 3 to 5 and finishing with a 6-6 record in 2003. That 2003 team stood toe-to-toe with Pac 10 powers Washington and Oregon and was better than their record. When Ault took over in 2004,13 players left the team over the summer and just 70 of their players were on scholarship. They benefitted from playing a soft schedule (#109) and, in fact, after 10 weeks not a single one of their foes had a winning record. Nevada was much better at home than on the road as they were 5-1 at home, winning by an average of 41.5-26.7. On the road they were 0-6 SU losing by an avg of 42.2-17.8. Last year Nevada had a dream season as they got their first winning year since 1998. Seventy-two of their 73 players stayed in school for summer workouts and Ault commented how they were bigger, stronger and faster. They ended a 5 game losing streak to rival UNLV, reclaiming the Freemont Cannon. After a 49-14 loss to Boise St, they were just 4-3 but rallied to win theirfi rial four, including a victory over #16 Fresno St, who was coming off their huge effort vs USC. They then beat UCF in the bowl game by 1 in OT and finished with an outstanding 9-3 mark and #29 in the AP poll. They were 7-1 and co-Champs of the WAC but outgained foes by just 59.6 ypg, only the 4th best mark in the league. Nevada also benefited from +4 in net close wins (pg 299). On offense lastyear Nevada instituted the "pistol" formation, where the QB lined up 5 yards from the line of scrimmage in a mini-shotgun. After averaging just 21.3 ppg their first three games, they avg'd 38.4 ppg their final 9. While RB Mitchell will be tough to replace, they have seven starters back, including QB Rowe and will be potent. The Wolf Pack's D is much improved and could allow the fewest ppg since 1996 (23.2). This is an even stronger team than last year but so is their schedule.
