New Mexico State Aggies Football CB Courtney Byran
Last year I drew some parallels between the Aggie program and Nebraska. NMSt ran the Nebraska option much like the Huskers did in 2003 and was switching to a pure pass offense last year. That was a big part of the reason that in 20041 forecasted the Huskers to have their first losing season in 42 years and they struggled mightily in the change. In Mumme's first year here the results were even worse as the Aggies had the worst record in the NCAA at 0-12 and achieved their first winless season since 1989. A good portion of their points early in the year came late in the game as they trailed UTEP 31 -0 at the half but scored 17 garbage points. At NM they trailed 38-7 before getting 2 late TD's and they trailed LT 34-0 before getting 2 TD's in the final 1:05. Even with those scores, they managed just 16.5 ppg in the new passing offense. In their final two years in the SBC, NMSt had outgained its conf foes by 113.3 ypg in 2003 and 104.5 ypg in 2004. With the change in offense and conference, the Aggies were outgained by a league worst 124.2 ypg. The closest they came to victory was a 2 OT loss to Idaho and a season finale 24-21 home loss when Utah St got a 32 yd FG with 1:16 left. All of the indicators point to an improved record this year which almost seems obvious as they were -23 in turnovers (see pg 312) and are now in the 2nd year of Mumme's system. The offense gets the amazing addition of Miami, FL transfer WR Akieem Jolla (PS#5), should get much better QB play and could even come close to doubling last year's ppg. The defense has just 6 starters returning and loses 5 of theirtop 6tacklers but can still improve upon last year's 38.8 ppg allowed. This year's team has more speed allowing Widenhofer to play his schemes which involves a lot more blitzing. Mumme pointed out that confidence is huge in college football and last year the Aggies were done in by a brutal opening slate as they were big dogs in their first 7. This year the opening slate is much more manageable and the offense should be stronger with QB Holbrook and WR Jolla. Last year just 2 Aggies were members of the 3-4-5 Club (300 Ib power clean, 400 Ib bench, 500 Ib squat). This year they actually have 12 members of the club and expect 3 more by fall.
