Conference: Sun Belt
Team: North Texas Mean Green Football
North Texas Mean Green Football RB Jamario Thomas
N Texas wasTHE dominantteam in the SBC having 25 straight conf wins, the longest streak in the country heading into last season, outscoring league foes by an avg of 15.6 ppg. They had an edge over the rest of their SBC brethren in the fact that they had been to 4 straight bowl games giving them extra practices each year. In 2004 NT benefited from +13 in turnovers and only putgained SBC foes by 15.3 ypg, by far the weakest margin in their4titleyears.Forthe season NT finished 7-5 despite being outgained by 70.2 ypg including their non-conf matchups. Dickey got a contract extension through 2009 and is the last of the original SBC head coaches. Last year out of the 12 preseason magazines and websites monitored by, I was one of only 3 NOT to forecast NT to win the SBC Title which got the attention of some fans in Denton. NT only had 8 returning starters and was outgained in SBC play by a league worst 67.3 ypg and finished in the basement. As usual, they did not win a single non-conf game so they finished just 2-9. NT does have a massive enrollment of 31,000+ and installed Sportexe Omnigrass turf in 2005. NT could have gone winless but they had a lucky win vs MTSt in which they were outFD'd 22-14 and outgained 383-274. The other win came at Fla Int'l (outFD'd 18-11). In fact, NT was outgained in every single game last year and was -164.7 ypg on the season. They suffered their worst home loss ever vs Tulsa (54-2) and were winless at home for the first time since 1982. The bright side is that their five SBC losses were by a combined 21 pts and they were only outscored by 1.6 ppg in conf play (5th best). This year they have a much more veteran squad with 16 returning starters. Last year NT's inexperienced offense only avg 14.3 ppg, their lowest since 1999. This year with a healthy Jamario Thomas, more experienced QB's and OL and an excellent set of receivers, they could even double that total in 2006. The defense had just 3 starters back last year and had to replace 8 of their top 13 tacklers and allowed 31.5 ppg. This year they have 7 defensive starters back including 24 of their top 28 tacklers and will be much tougher vs the run and the pass.
