Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football WR Jeff Samardzija
Ty Willingham started off his ND career at 8-0 but was just 13-15 after that with 8 losses of 21 + points. Dan Devine had two losses by 21 + points and even Gerry Faust had just three. ND had not finished in the Top 10 for 11 straight seasons and still has not won a bowl in 13 years. After a 5-7 season in 2003,1 called the Irish the 7th most improved team in the country and they became yet another squad that got to a bowl after a losing season. They beat a Top 10 team on the road for the first time since 1996 (Tenn). When Willingham tookover, he convertedtheteamfrom an option-style rush attack to a pro-style pass attack and I mentioned at the time that it is usually a 3 to 4 year process. Last year Charlie Weis stepped into a great situation as he was in the 4th year of the change of offense and now had a pro-style QB, pro-style receivers and OL's who were used to pass blocking. He also inherited 10 returning starters on offense. I said they would easily beat the 24.1 ppg they achieved in 2004 and that they did rolling up 36.7 ppg. ND faced the 12th toughest schedule in the NCAA. They opened the season with a win over #23 Pitt and then upended #3 Michigan, both on the road. UM was the highest ranked team that ND had beaten since 1993. Weis became the first ND coach to begin his tenure with back-to-back road wins since Knute Rockne in 1918. He also became the first ND HC to lose his first two home games since Frank E. Hering in 1896 which actually tied aschool record with 4 straight home losses. The 2nd loss was to #1 ranked DSC, a game where the Irish almost pulled off the big upset, giving up aTD on the last play. The Irish won their next 4 after that and needed a win over Stanford to receive a BCS bowl berth. Despite 30-14 FD and 663-336 yd edges, they needed aTD with :55 left to pull out the win. They were outgained by Ohio St, 617-348 in their8th straight bowl loss. Weis was named the FWAA Coach of the Year. They have 7 starters back on offense and could be just as potent as the 2005 version. Last year's defense had just 3 returning starters and this season they have 9 back. After allowing 397 ypg, the Irish could have one of the most improved defenses in the NCAA. Despite a tough schedule, the Irish figure to be favored in their first 11 games and a trip to the National Title game may be riding on their Nov 25th trip to Los Angeles.
