OU has had just two winning seasons since 1982 and has not won a MAC Championship since 1968. In 2003, despite a 1-7 record in the MAC, OU was only outgained by an average of 20.6 ypg showing things could have been much better. In 2004 they had 17 starters returning for Brian Knorr's 4th year as head man but were switching from the option to a pass attack which is a slow adjustment and offenses generally struggle. That season OU had a 290-217 yard edge at Pitt but lost on the scoreboard, howeverthey would beat SEC foe Kentucky on the road 28-16to move to 3-2 and had Bobcat fans thinking bowl. They trailed Toledo just 10-5 at the half, led Akron 13-0 but gave up five TO's including a 60 yd int return for a TD losing both games and finished just 4-7. Bobcat fans were energized last year when they hired Frank Solich who returned them to a more run-oriented offense. They were actually picked 3rd in the MAC East-in the preseason poll. In their first National TV game since 1969, OU beat Pitt in OT in front of a record crowd, 16-10. They opened the season 4-4 and had a Friday night National TV game vs Toledo, a game they trailed just 27-21 in the 40 but they lost that one and dropped their final two finishing with an identical record to 2004's. They were just 1 -5 on the road last year. This is now the 2nd year of Solich's systems and they have 18 returning starters, the most in the MAC. The Bobcats incorporated their 3rd offensive system in 3 years last season and had just six starters back, struggling to avg just 17.5 ppg, their lowest since 1995. This year they have 9 starters back including their top 6 rushers and top 2 receivers. They have a more veteran O-line and a solid QB addition in Brad Bower andshould have their best ppg on offense since 2000. The Bobcats allowed 30.5 ppg in Solich's first year and figure to be a vastly improved on that side of the ball.
