Oregon St snapped a TWENTY-EIGHT year streak of losing seasons in 1999 and has had solid success this decade even finishing #4 in the final polls in 2000. In 2004 Oregon St won the 'Northwest Championship' beating Wash, Wash St and Oregon in the same year for the first time since 1974. The Beavers have turned Reser Stadium into a pit for opposing teams as they are 32-9 their last 42 home games. Last year the stadium underwent a $93 million expansion project including replacing their old artificial turf with FieldTurf (to cut down on inj) and increasing the capacity. They did see their streak of 28 consecutive sellouts end. In 2002 they were 4-4 in Pac 10 play but outgained foes by 67 ypg. Dennis Erickson opted to leave and Mike Riley inherited 15 returning starters. In 2003, OSU opened 5-1 and made it to their 4th bowl in 5 years. Not only did they match their 8-5 record of 2002, but even more impressively outgained Pac 10 foes by an average of 141.8 ypg. That was even better than co-Nat'l Champ USC despite their 4-4 league mark! OSU was -8 in turnovers on the year and whipped New Mexico in their bowl 55-14. In 2004 they nearly defeated defending co-Nat'l Champ LSU in Death Valley (3 missed xp's) but opened the season just 1 -4 and were blown out by Cal 49-7. They had to go 5-1 just to make a bowl then dispatched ND 38-21 in the Insight Bowl (5th bowl in six years). The 2004 squad simply faced the toughest schedule in the country. Last year they were the only team in the Pac 10 not to face USC. OSU was blown out on consecutive weekends by L'ville and Ariz St but in Wk 6 snapped #18 Cal's 10 game home win streak and moved to 4.-2. The next week they lost big to #8 UCLA and then despite a 31-14 FD edge at home vs Arizona, were done in by 7 turnovers in a 29-27 loss. Against Stanford, they missed 3 FG's and QB Moore was injured in the 20 and once again an expected home win turned into a loss. In 2004 the Beavers had destroyed Oregon in the season finale knocking the Ducks out of a bowl game and UO returned the favor with a 56-14 thrashing in the finale as OSU was without QB Moore. Despite their 3-5 Pac 10 record, OSU still outgained Pac 10 foes by 13.7 ypg (4th best). A good note this year for OSU is the fact they were -14 in turnovers (see pg 312). With a vastly improved 0-line and 9 starters back on offense, they will be much more potent than 'O5's 26.6 ppg. In '04 the D allowed over 24.5 ppg, their worst since 1998 and topped that high in '05 (33.2). Despite the loss of two 1st team Pac 10 LB's, with 7 starters back they will be an improved D. Unfortunately for OSU, the Pac 10 schedule is tough as 4 of their 5 home games are vs the league's top teams, but this team is still capable of getting to its 4th bowl in 5 years.
