Head Coach: Steve Spurrier (7-5, 1 year; 149-45-2 overall, 16 years) 2005 Record: 7-5,5-3/T2nd SEC East Venue:Williams-Brice Stadium
Location: Columbia, SC Turf: Grass Capacity: 80,250 Seating Chart:
SC's last conf title came in the ACC in 1969. SC won just one game in 1998 and 1999 combined but Holtz then guided them to consecutive Outback Bowl victories over Ohio St in 2000 and '01. After opening 2002 at 5-2, an injury-plagued SC team dropped their final 5 and missed a bowl. In 2003 with the fewest returning starters in the SEC (9), they nearly broke through. The Gamecocks had tight losses to both Tenn and Florida and they are a combined 3-25 against them since joining the SEC. Needing just one win, they lost their final four (5-7). In 2004 they had 17 starters back and got off to a 5-2 start and this time actually won one of their final 4 to become bowl-eligible but due to a brawl vs Clemson, did not go to a bowl. Spurrier had just 8 (fewest SEC) returning starters and was switching from a run-based attack to a pass attack. They set a school record with 62,618 season tickets. I called the program a sleeping giant and Spurrier, who has guided his teams to bowls in 13 out of 16 years, did an amazing job. They almost upset #9 UGA but then were throttled by Bama at home and two games later by Auburn on the road by a combined margin of 85-21. A bowl appeared unlikely at 2-3 but then they beat Kentucky and got a TD with 1:41 left to beat Vandy. Having lost 8 straight games to ranked teams, they knocked off #23 Tenn. They beat Arkansas on the road despite being outgained 356-187 and then vs Spurrier's old team, the #12 Gators, they got their first win over UF since 1939. If UGA had lost to Kentucky, SC would have been the SEC East Champ and they had 5 straight SEC wins for the first time ever. They were knocked off by Clemson and surprisingly went to the Independence Bowl where they blew a 28-7 lead and lost. Despite their 5-3 record in the SEC, they were actually out-gained by 76.4 ypg in league play. The offense has 7 starters back including QB Mitchell and will easily top 'OS's 23.7 ppg. Despite the loss of 11 players who started on defense, including star Ko Simpson, the D is actually more experienced and could be better. SC does have the Mitchell/Rice pass combo on offense and get both Tenn and UGA at home. They should become bowl-eligible once again this year and could out perform expectations as a second straight season.
