From 1981 -1984 SMU was among the best teams in the country going 41-5-1 but the "Death Penalty" hit them hard and they've had just one winning season since. In Phil Bennett's first season (2002) 7 starters left the team so what looked to be an experienced unit quickly turned inexperienced. SMU was still 3-5 in league play. They had 13 starters back in 2003 but suffered some tough losses including four by 7 points or less and were -13 in TO's. Those factors resulted in their first winless season since 1960. They were outgained by a league worst 138.7 ypg in WAC play. Head coaches rebuilding programs usually have their best success in the third season and in 2004 Bennett had to replace only 12 lettermen but did have 86 underclassmen on their 113 man roster (76%), the highest % in the NCAA. SMU was able to end its 15 game losing streak when they opened conf play with a stunning 36-13 blowout of SJSt. At this point Bennett said "In 26 years of coaching I cannot remember so many injuries to a defense". After four blowout losses and with Bennett under pressure, SMU knocked off Tulsa in OT and then beat Nevada. The Mustangs even led UTEP 20-10 before crumbling but that promising finish saved Bennett his job. They were still outgained by 88.1 ypg in 2004 in conf play. Last year he had the most returning starters in the CUSA (16) and was coming off a season where they were -19 in turnovers. Last year I called for the defense to allow their lowest ppg under Bennett and they did just that (25.5). I had called for SMU to top 2004's three wins and the Mustangs nearly achieved a winning record going 4-4 in CUSA play even though they were outgained by 55.6 ypg. Despite having 24 players back with 6 or more starts, they suffered 4 close losses. They did deal TCU their only loss of the year for their first win over a ranked team since 1986. They blew a 10-0 4Q lead to Marshall but got a miracle win vs UAB on a Hail Mary with no time left which ended a 14 game road losing streak. EC got 17 of their 24 points off turnovers and SMU outgained league champ Tulsa 337-323 but lost due to 3 TO's. They knocked off UTEP who needed a win over SMU to win the CUSA West Title. Bennett was under fire with the team at 2-6 but their 5-6 finish was their best since 1997 and they had their first 3 game win streak since 1999 and were 3-1 vs bowl teams. In fact had SMU beaten Tulsa, they would have been the CUSA West Champ!
