Head Coach: Jim Leavitt (61-39, 9 years) 2005 Record: 6-6,4-3/T3rd Big East Venue:Raymond James Stadium
Location: Tampa, FL Turf: Grass Capacity: 65,000 Seating Chart:
On Sept 6,1996,75 players assembled for the 1 st practice ever as the Bulls established their football program and in 1997 they played their first game. Jim Leavitt has done a tremendous job as they went 8-3 in their first year of IA ball in 2001 and the next year actually got four votes in the AP poll after they beat BG. In 2002 they were an outstanding 9-2 on the year with their only losses to Arkansas and Oklahoma on the road. In 2003 they joined CUSA and achieved a winning conf record in their first season at 5-3, but were actually outgamed by 44.6 ypg in league play as they won a total of three double OT games and could easily have finished 4-7 instead of 7-4. In 20041 called for them to have their first losing record since 1997. They did have RB Andre Hall on the offense but the defense yielded a school worst 31.9 ppg as 24 different defensive players earned starts due to injury. Last year they had 4 road games in the Big East and also had to face Penn St and Miami, PL on the road and lost a Big East high 28 lettermen. They were -10 in turnovers in 2004 (see page 312) and picked 7th in the preseason Big East poll (70 frosh and soph on the roster). The Bulls finished tied for 3rd and late in the year were in contention for the BE Title ranked #30 until a loss at Connecticut in 30' temps, (the coldest game they'd ever played in). Their +7.6 ppg in Big East play wasbest among the teams they were tied with. They knocked off UCF, who played for the CUSA Title, by a comfortable 31-14 margin and also stunned #9 Louisville 45-14. Due to Hurricane Katrina they spent 56 days between home games and until the season finale (a tough loss to WV), had been the only team in the country not to trail in a home game. In that game USF had a 23-16 FD edge. While making it to their first ever bowl, they also suffered their 1st ever shutout 14-0 to NCSt. This year they have four BE home games. The offense relied on RB Andre Hall last year but now the strength is in the receiving corps, so I look for them to be more pass-oriented in the spread offense. They avg'd just 23.0 ppg in '05 (lowest in school history) and despite the loss of Hall, they have a shot at improving on that total. They have 7 starters back on defense and the back 7 figure to be the best in the Big East so they have a shot of improving on '05's numbers. USF has a chance to earn the 2nd bowl berth in school history.
