In the first four years of CUSA play, SM was an outstanding 21 -2 but in the next 3 years stunningly lost 9 out of 22 league games and was 10-9 their last 19 heading into 2003. SM was in the AP Top 25 for 23 straight weeks from Oct 10,1999 to Nov 12,2000 but had a streak of 4 straight bowls end in 2001. They got back to a bowl in 2002 and in 20031 called for them to top 7 wins for the first time since 1999. Thanks to their defense and ST's they did. They were actually outgained in 2003 (by 62 ttl yds) despite their 9-4 record. They were also 8-0 in CUSA play despite being outgained by 39.6 ypg! In 2004 SM finished in a 4-way tie for 2nd at 5-3 but once again were outgained in league play (21.1 ypg). They also benefitted from not having to face league juggernaut L'vilie. SM defeated N Texas in the bowl to finish 7-5 but once again were outgained on the season, this time by 597 yds. In 2004 they suffered their worst ever league loss at "The Rock" (52-24 to Cincy) and actually lost 3 straight CUSA games for the first time ever before rallying from a 1H 14-3 deficit to knock off UAB. Last year, for the third consecutive season, SM was outgained in CUSA play (-38.0 ypg) but finished with a winning record (5-3). SM had just 9 returning starters last year but benefitted from +14 in turnovers (see pg 312). SM also only had one win vs a lAteamthat finished with a winning record. SM did accomplish a winning record despite having their lives and football schedule disrupted in Sept. Due to hurricanes, the Eagles were evacuated to Memphis for 8 days and had 2 games postponed. For the 3rd consecutive year, SM was outgained overall by 441 yards. SM has been to 8 bowls the last 9 years. They only had 4 starters back on offense last year but still managed 29.6 ppg, their best since 1998. Despite having to replace QB Almond, they have 9 starters back this year on offense and could be just as potent. SM's D yielded 394 ypg last year and even with just 6 starters back, this has the makings of a top-notch unit. The defense will help SM to record yet another season and they are a bonafide contender in the CUSA East.s
