Conference: Pac 10
Team: Stanford Cardinal Football
Stanford Cardinal Football MLB Michael Okwo
Buddy Teevens was a solid recruiter but had three losing seasons after taking over for Ty Willingham. In Teevens1 second season (2003) they had 11 starters back and were outgained by a Pac 10 worst 185 ypg in league play and only avg 16.3 ppg overall. In 2004 they were still outgained by a Pac 10 worst 118.9 ypg in league play. That 2004 team opened up 2-0 with a pair of blowouts and actually received votes in the AP poll. They led USC by 11 at the half in game 3 but finished just 4-7. Harris inherited a team with just 11 lettermen lost and 15 starters back. After beating Navy in the opener, they got a lot of national publicity by losing to UC Davis on a TD pass with :08 left and opened the season just 2-2. They improved as the season went on and nearly made a bowl, the Cardinal got 2 consecutive road wins for the first time since 2001 and went through a 4 game stretch without turning the ball over. They were actually 3-1 in the Pac 10 and led UCLA 24-3 with 8:26 left but allowed 3 TD's and lost in OT. They benefitted from OSU missing 3 FG's in a 20-17 road win but lost their 4th straight "Big Game" for the first time in 66 years. SU perhaps played their best game ys ND. Despite being outFD'd 30-14, they nearly upset the Irish allowing a TD and 2 pt conv with :55 left. Their stadium capacity this year moves from 85,500 to just 50,000 which will make Stanford Stadium much less cavernous (avg 43,550 in '05). The Cardinal finished 4th in the Pac 10 at 4-4, but for the 3rd straight year were last in the Pac 10 being outgained by 105.6 in conf play. SU does have the most returning starters in the Pac 10 and are now in the 2nd year of the Harris system. SU took on the 6th toughest schedule in the country last year (pg 317). Harris does have a complex offense but the numbers should improve in the 2nd year as they have 10 returning starters, including two QB's with experience. The Cardinal will have theirhighest offensive ppg since'01. The Cardinal had just Sstarters back on D lastyearand allowed 30.6 ppg.
