The Vol's12004 season of 10-3 was very misleading. They were 7-1 in SEC play and yet only outgained SEC foes by an avg of 14.5 ypg, just the 7th best mark in the conference. I pointed out in my Regional Magazine that in the best case/worst case scenario Tenn could have actually had been a 4-9 team in 2004. I did not make a lot of friends in Knoxville in 2005. UT was ranked #4 in the AP and was the preseason choice to win the SEC Title. The last time they had been the SEC favorite, they finished just 8-5. Despite being #3 in the preseason coaches poll, I had them #3 as well but it was in the SEC East as mine was the only magazine that called for GA to win the conference and the ONLY magazine thatdid NOT have UT in first place. UT was fortunate to get past UAB in the opener. After losing in The Swamp, they were extremely fortunate that LSU had its practices disrupted by the Hurricane and did not have the conditioning needed to hold on to a 21 point 40 lead. UT was throttled by Georgia at home and actually lost 4 games in a row for the first time since 1988. Fulmer moved to just 3-8 vs Spurrier when they lost by 1 to SC. They were stunned at home snapping a streak of 22 straight wins vs Vandy (Vandy's last win in Nashville was 1975) dealing 26 seniors a poor final home game while having their streak of 16 consecutive bowls snapped. Since needing a win in 2001 to go to the National Title game (but lost to LSU) the team is just 34-18. Fulmer's previous worst year was 2002's 8-5. On the bright side for Tenn fans is that last year was very reminiscent of when UT went from 10-2-1 in '87 to 5-6 in '88 and was upset by a Steve Spurrier-led Duke team. That '88 team scored just 212 points while the 2005 squad had just 205. In '89, the Vols rebounded with an 11 -1 record and finished #5 in the final poll. Last year UT outgained SEC foes by 28.9 ypg despite their 3-5 conf mark. David Cutcliffe returns as the OC, has 7 starters back on that side of the ball and should see more consistent QB play. That should mean they should be significantly better than the 18.6 ppg they achieved in 2005. The defense does lose 6 top-notch starters but should still be one of the SEC's stronger groups. With a much improved QB (Ainge) and Cutcliffe back on offense, the Vols could go from a dissappointment to a surprise.
