Prior to Mack Brown's arrival, UT had not finished in the Top 10 since 1983. While Longhorn'fans were not thrilled with Brown, as he had the reputation for not being able to win the big one, they were #5 in the polls in 2001 and outgained Big 12 foes by 200.7 ypg. They were #6 in 2002, the first time they had back-to-back Top 10 finishes since 1978. In 2003 they had double digit wins in back-to-back weeks vs ranked teams for the first time since 1947 but yet were not invited to a BCS bowl despite their #5 ranking. In 2004 for the first time in school history, UT achieved 10+ wins for four straight years and were 11-1 finishing #5 in the polls. After their Rose Bowl win over Michigan, Vince Young said they would be back. Brown came into last season just 1-12 vs Top 5 teams and I drew comparisons lastyear to Tom Osborne of Nebraska who had similarnumbers and yet walked away with two National Titles. I called for Brown to win his first ever Big 12 Title last year and gave the Horns an excellent shot at appearing in the Rose Bowl. UT had to defeat Ohio St on the road needing a late comeback for a 25-22 win. They also had to defeat nemesis Oklahoma but did so comfortably winning 45-12. UT not only outscored foes by an amazing 33.8 ppg, but their closest game in the regular season besides Ohio St was oddly an 11 point win over ASM. They obliterated CU in the Big 12 Title game 70-3 and then conquered two-time defending National Champ USC to deliver an undisputed National Title for Mack Brown (yes, the same coach with the "couldn't win the big game label"). Unfortunately Vince Young opted for the NFL and the Horns suffered significant losses in the NFL draft . They have six returning starters on offense but without Young they will come nowhere near last year's amazing 50.2 ppg. The D could be almost as strong, despite having 2 :ewer returning starters than last year. Texas figures to be avored in all 12 of their games and 4 of my 7 sets of power atings call for them to have an unbeaten season with games vs Dhio St and Okla, the key to getting to the National Title Game.
