Only one coach since 1982 has had consecutive winning seasons here so it is to no historian's surprise that after their 8-5 2002 team took home the Hawaii Bowl Title that the Greenies slipped to 5-7 in 2003. In 2004 they had to replace a 1st round DC at QB in JP Losman and the school's all-time leading rusher in Mewelde Moore. Despite the major losses, Tulane still had 16 starters back and only an E Car FG with :12 left (27-25 loss) cost them a winning season. Last year they returned a veteran QB and 16 returning starters but had one of the most unimaginable seasons of any team in the NCAAdue to Hurricane Katrina. They worked out in Dallas at SMU's campus and later established their "home" at Louisiana Tech's campus. During the course of the season, Tulane did not play a single game on campus, playing in 11 different venues in 11 games. Not surprising, atulaneteam with more important things on their minds than football, slumped to 1-7 in CUSA play and just 2-9 overall. Tulane was -12 in turnovers (see pg 312). They should have a much more stable season and figure to be improved. They did have their chances as they trailed UTEP just 24-21 in the 3Q, were tied with Houston 7-7 at the half, led UCF14-13 in the 2Q, blew a 26-14 lead over Marshall in the 4Q, led Rice 31-28 in the 3Q, (SM outgained TU 412-270) and all this despite usually taking a 4-5 hour bus ride to their "home" games. One of the main reasons for the blown leads was the poor conditioning due to the upheaval and mental mistakes due to distractions. They travelled 3,644 miles by bus and 5,171 by air. Last year's offense had 7 starters back but ayg just 21.3 ppg, their worst since 1996 but with 6 starters back this year, should be much improved. Tulane's D had 9 starters back last year but allowed 31.6 ppg. They were a lot better than that total indicates as due to the playing conditions they were worn down and after four games, had allowed opponents 7 points in the 1H but 80 in the 2H.
