Conference: Pac 10
Team: Washington State Cougars Football
Washington State Cougars Football WR Jason Hill
Heading into last year, WSU had the second best record among Pac 10 schools from 2001-2004 at 35-14. The Cougars have scored in 249 straight games, 2nd nationally to Michigan. In the Mike Price era the team had 13 returning starters four times and in each of those times made it to a bowl (including Rose Bowls in 1997 and 2002). In Bill Doha's first season they had the magical 13 starters returning and despite a tough schedule, finished 10-3 including their upset win in the Holiday Bowl over #5 Texas. It was WSU's amazing 3rd straight Top 10 finish, the first Pac 10 team to do so since 1974 and they accomplished that despite being picked 7th in the Pac 10. They only had 6 starters back in 2004 and as expected, went 5-6 and were +2 in close wins. Last year the Cougars had to replace just 13 lettermen and had 15 starters back with a soft non-conf schedule but were one of the most snake bit teams in the country. It was a team that could have easily finished the year with 10 or 11 wins. After opening the season 3-0, they led OSU 30-16 and had a 638-410 yd edge but lost WR Hill to injury in the 2H. They also lost star LB Derting until the Apple Cup. They were favored by 14 at home over Stanford but came up 3 points short and then stunningly blewa 38-21 lead vs UCLA losing in OT. They led Cal 38-28 and had the ball with 6:05 left in Cal territory but lost. Trailing Ariz St by 3, they missed 2 FG's, were SOD at the 5 and then gave up a FG on the last play to lose to Oregon. Despite their 1 -7 record in conf play, they had the 5th best ypg (-14.5) in Pac 10 play. Doba is under some pressure this year but the good news is that the team had 4 net close losses (see pg 299). The Cougars lose their star offensive player in Jerome Harrison (1,900 rush yards) and havejust six starters backonoffense this year as opposed to 9 in 2005. They again will be potent but probably will not match last year's 33.5 ppg. The Cougars' D's had six starters returning last year but were injury-plagued losing two of its best players for most of the year and allowed 31.5 ppg (highest S/2000). This year they have 8 starters back and will more resemble the Cougar D's of their bowl squads (2001-2003).
