This has been an injury-ravaged team for the last 3 years that has not caught a lot of breaks. 2004 was their first losing season in 27 years and last year they were picked #10 in the conf by the media, their lowest ever in the preseason rankings (previous low #7). 95% of the players stayed to workout over the summer but a once-feared home venue has gotten weaker due to the team's 9-25 record the last three seasons. Their three wins the last 2 years were the lowest since 1929-'30 (3-9-1). Since Husky Stadium was expanded in 1987, the lowest crowd had been 58,823 (1988) but last year, despite an announced attendance of 60,000 they had about 20,000 on hand vs Oregon St in a constant rain. What used to be a loud, sellout home crowd nowfeatures empty seats. Ty Willingham was able to improve the teams record last year but only by 1 game although they did have three tough losses. They led Air Force 17-6 but ended up losing 20-17. They blew a couple of early opportunities vs ND, fumbling at the goal line and being int'd in the EZ before being blown out and did lead UCLA 17-7 in the 4Q giving up a TD with 1:08 left. They also allowed Wash St a TD with 1:20 left. Last year's Huskies squad had just 12 seniors (7 starters). The last 3 years they have been outgained in P10 play by -52.4, -108.1 and -82.6. UW took on the 10th toughest schedule in the country (pg 317). The Huskies had 10 starters back on offense and while only 5 managed to start all 11, they improved upon 2004's paltry 14.0 ppg production (21.5). This year they have 6 starters back and how quick the OL matures (1 starter returning) is the key how potent the offense will be. The Huskies D has surprisingly not allowed less than 26.3 ppg in the last 5 years yielding 30.4 and 30.6 the last 2 seasons. With 8 solid starters back on D and plenty of VHT's they should have one of the most improved D's in the NCCA this year.
