With the most productive freshman class in school history returning for its sophomore season, Dayton coach Brian Gregory still hesitates to think of his team as experienced.
"When you start a new season, there are different questions," Gregory says. "Did they elevate their game? Will they be able to take on different roles? I still consider them young, but the experience they had in big games will help us down the road."
On paper, the Flyers are set to compete for an Adantic-10 title. The top three scorers (Monty Scott, 11.1; Brian Roberts, 9.2; Norman Plum-mer, 9.1) and rebounders (Scott, 4.6; Plummer, 4.4; Chris Alvarez, 3.8) from last season's 18—11 team are back.
But with so much youth, however tested it is, it is still a pair of seniors, point guard Warren Williams and swingman Marques Bennett, that Gregory will count on to be the catalysts for the Flyers. Williams' court command is essential with so much youth on the floor for Dayton, and Bennett, while not a big producer, has a knack for making key plays.
When it comes to scoring, however, age doesn't seem to matter to Dayton. Roberts and Plummer are both sophomores who showed glimpses of high-level output as freshmen. Gregory expects to see them receive even more opportunities this year, along with Scott, a senior who could end up being one of the more dynamic players in the league if he becomes wen more productive on the boards.
Incoming freshmen Charles Little, a 6'6" forward, and Desmond Adedeji, a 6'9" center, will likely contribute for the Flyers, though in limited amounts at first. Little is one of the best athletes on the team, and Adedeji provides size and a much-needed defensive presence down low. With four starters and 11 of the top 13 scorers back from last seas it's hard not to label Dayton as an A-10 contender, considering die 1 ers finished second in the A-10 West in 2004-05.
It might take until the A-10 season starts in January, however, for C gory to know how much the experience of last season played a roll developing this season's talent.
"We're hoping they were getting better because of the experiena playing in pressurized situations," Gregory says. "When it really cor to pass is when you get into the grind of the conference season."
