There is no reason to believe the playoffs shouldn't be in sight this season for the Chargers, who boast a complete roster. Philip Rivers' progress will get a lot of attention, but he may not have to be a star for them to win. Pass coverage must improve, however.
After watching Chargers for last couple of years we do know now they can stop a great team like the patriots and Colts winning streaks. Chargers letting there QB signing with New Orleans Saints who will now give the Chargers a chance to use there QB Philip Rivers who has been sitting on the side lines for 2 years now waiting to be a starter.
Free Agents: Picking up Defensive Marlon McCree from Carolina, and Offensive TE Aaron Shea from Cleveland.
2006 Team Draft Notes: Chargers had a few needs entering the draft, and the team addressed one of them by selecting Florida State cornerback Antonio Cromartie with the No. 19 pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. Cromartie is considered by many to be a risky pick because of his inexperience, but he will definitely fill a need and is perhaps the most athletically gifted cornerback in the draft. In Round 2, San Diego took a chance on Auburn offensive tackle Marcus McNeill (No. 50). He has first-round talent, but teams shied away from him because he has a narrow spinal column. Then the Chargers, who are getting Philip Rivers ready to be the starting quarterback, made a fascinating choice in Round 3 with former Clemson QB Charlie Whitehurst (No. 81).
With a point differential of plus-106, the 2005 Chargers were the second team in the last 14 seasons to miss the playoffs despite having a margin of plus-100 or better. The 2004 Bills missed the postseason despite having a plus-111 point differential.
Size, athletic ability, strength, power, explosion. Merriman has it all. The sky's the limit for him. He has the physical skills to take a game over on defense. He's got Lawrence Taylor-like qualities. Now I'm not saying he's LT, because LT's done it. But if you're going to say, 'Who has a chance to do LT things?' Well, this guy does. If there's a hole in his game, it's experience and that's it. He was a rookie last year and he didn't start right away. But that's the only hole. He got lots of playing time later in the season and /ou could see the impact he made. He's coachable, disciplined and you don't see him doing the things that LaVar Arrington did as a young guy. He couldn't play within the system and that's why he's not in Washington anymore. This guy has no problem doing what he's asked.
