Your Hall of Fame coach last made news by sending in a player he called a "goon" to wreak havoc against another Philadelphia Big Five school. Once an NCAATournament staple, you haven't been a part of March Madness since 2001. You bowed out quietly in the first round of last year's NIT after failing to win more than two straight games all season.
Yet there is optimism at Temple. The Owls have plenty to prove, but with four starters back—plus another part-time starter — and the possibility of a little more scoring punch, an NCAA bid is a reasonable goal. Of course, all eyes will be on John Chaney, back for his 24th season at Temple. That wasn't a given in February after Chaney sent in reserve big man Nehemiah Ingram to commit hard fouls against Saint Joseph's, and Hawks forward John Bryant ended up with a broken arm. Chaney was angrily unrepentant after the game, and the coach was suspended for the rest of Temple's regular season and the Atlantic-10 Tournament.
Chaney returned for the NIT, which consisted of a bus trip to Vir-giniaTech and a feeble 50-point offensive effort. Several days later, Temples president, David Adamany, said Chaney would return for the upcoming season, but he also said they would talk about the coach's long-term future during the fall.
Back to on-court issues: A strength for the '05-06 Owls should be their size, especially in the backcourt, where point guard Mardy Collins and 2-guards MarkTyndale and Dustin Salisbery form one of the leagues tallest each stands at least 6'5" and most athletic perimeter attacks. At times last season, they ran Temple's matchup zone to perfection.
Temple hopes that freshman forward Dionte Christmas, the leading scorer in the Philadelphia Public League in 2003-04, can make some jump shots. Christmas' shooting should clear a little space inside for 6' 11" junior Wayne Marshall, who will be counted on to deliver after the Owls' other center, Keith Butler, left school over the summer. Forward Antywane Robinson also returns, as does Ingram, who decided in the spring to also try out for Temple's football team.
Led by Collins, who held his own in early-season matchups with top ACC guards at Wake Forest and Duke, the Owls may be the most experienced team in the Adantic-10. But Chancy doesn't have any players with NCAA Tournament experience, so even as the Owls try to move past last season's debacle, questions still outweigh answers at Temple.
