Fifty-one wins over the past two years is a lot. More than Arizona. And Kansas. And Georgia Tech. And Wake Forest. And Syracuse. And, by now, surely the point is clear.
Still, when most people think of UTEP, they don't necessarily think of big-time basketball. But those people are wrong.
Want proof? The Miners have been to two straight NCAA Tournaments and are coming off a year in which they won 27 contests and the WAC Tournament. Furthermore, they've done all this in front of home crowds averaging more than 10,000, always a good indication of how many people care about a program.
As for this year, it's a little less certain. Three of die top five scorers are gone, including the most important players from the past few seasons —point guard Filiberto Rivera (13.5 points and 7.2 assists per game) and forward Omar Thomas (20.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game). The other big loss is Giovanni St. Amant, UTEP's starting shooting guard who withdrew from school to take care of his ailing mother.
No matter how good any of the six newcomers are, UTEP will feel the losses, specifically in die backcourt. There is no proven impact player at either guard spot, though senior Miguel Ayala could be the answer at shooting guard after averaging 7.5 points per game last season while sinking a team-high 63 3-pointers.
At the point, diere are a few options, though none are ideal. Sophomore Vernon Carr can play the position, but he did so in just 12 games last season. Potentially the best is Kevin Henderson, who averaged 18.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists last year at San Bernardino Valley (Calif.) College.
"Kevin can definitely make an immediate impact at UTEP," coach Doc Sadler says. "He just needs to get some experience at this level." Senior Jason Williams, a lockdown defender, returns on the wing. Up front, John Tofi is back, as is Will Kimble, a 6' 10" center who was granted an additional year of eligibility. Tremaine Fuqua, a transfer from Oklahoma State, could also be a factor, or at least Sadler is expecting him to be. "Tremaine adds experience and scoring at the low post position," die coach says. "We need him to be a player who can score in double figures."
If he does, and UTEP can find a steady point guard, the Miners should be a factor in C-USA. If not, and UTEP can't find a steady point guard, that streak of NCAA Tournament appearances will likely end.
