Long championship droughts keep getting broken, and the Cubs keep getting left behind. A year after the Red Sox got their long-awaited World Series title, the crosstown White Sox got theirs, while the Cubs slumped below .500 and far out of the playoff race.
The pitching staff was hampered by injuries, with Greg Maddux and Carlos Zambrano the only starters who didn't miss turns in the rotation. Kerry Wood pitched just 66 innings before having shoulder surgery. The team's best pitcher was Ryan Dempster, who established himself as one of the best closers in the National League with 33 saves in 35 opportunities.
But the biggest bright spot for the Cubs in 2005 was first baseman Derrek Lee, who made a legitimate run at the Triple Crown and ended up winning the batting title by hitting .335. He was second in home runs with 46 and seventh in RBIs with 107. The Cubs batted .270 as a team and had 194 home runs, both second-best in the NL, but finished ninth in runs because they were undisciplined at the plate. Their 419 walks were fewest in the league. Epitomizing their approach was former centerfielder Corey Patterson, who hit .215 with 118 strikeouts and 23 walks.
The Cubs gave up on Patterson by bringing in Juan Pierre in a trade with the Marlins, in hopes Pierre can ignite the offense from the top of the lineup. Chicago has a core of strong players, both at the plate and on the mound; they're looking for the missing ingredients that can get them back to the playoffs.
