Well, it was fun while it lasted. The Marlins contended for the playoffs again before slumping late in the season, though they did complete just the fourth winning season in club history and the club's third straight. It will be the last winning season for awhile, as the club had a fire sale after the season and started looking for a new home.
Florida went into 2005 with the highest payroll in franchise history, $66 million, and the addition of a bona fide star in Carlos Delgado. Delgado led one of the best offenses in the National League, hitting 33 home runs with 115 RBIs, and Miguel Cabrera established himself as one of the best young players in the major leagues with an almost identical season, batting .323 (third in the NL) with 33 home runs and 116 RBIs.
On the mound, Cy Young candidate Dontrelle Willis was the workhorse, leading the NL with 22 wins and finishing third with a 2.63 ERA. Josh Beckett won 15 games and pitched 178 innings, a career high, but he missed time with a blister, emblematic of a season when injuries affected many of the Marlins' key players. Florida was in the thick of the playoff race in September when injuries took a toll and the team lost 12 of 14 games, leading to the resignation of manager Jack McKeon.
But that was nothing compared to the exodus that took place after the season. Beckett, Delgado, Mike Lowell, Juan Pierre — you name a significant veteran on the roster, and he'll probably be playing elsewhere in 2006. The same might be true of the Marlins in a few years.
