Arte Moreno has proven to be one of baseball most active owners, with the name change to Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim part of an effort to gain wider appeal in Southern California. More significantly, he has provided a budget that allows the Angels to compete with the big hitters for premium free agents, with AL Cy Young Award winner Bartolo Colon serving as 2005's most notable example. Colon won 21 games to become the Angels' first 20-game winner since Nolan Ryan in 1974.
Colon followed the success of Vladimir Guerrero, after the Angels signed both before the 2004 season. Guerrero's 2005 season might be remembered more for his terrible playoff performance, but during the regular season, he was as strong as ever, batting .317 with 32 home runs and 108 RBIs. The team also got important contributions from homegrown players, with closer Francisco Rodriguez saving 45 games and utilityman Chone Figgins playing six positions and leading the major leagues with 62 stolen bases.
Los Angeles has one of baseball's best farm systems, with an impressive collection of premium hitters who will start to make contributions in 2005. Added to a team that's already a proven success, the Angels should be a favorite in the AL West for years to come, no matter what you call them.
